A small church in Dawlish, South Devon is close to completing a new church community centre costing £1.8M on community land it purchased for just £1! The Hope Centre will be run by Hope Church (formerly Dawlish Christian Fellowship, DCF) and will provide a 330-seater auditorium, quality coffee shop, function room and much more besides.
Local ROC Dawlish Co-ordinator Mark Jones said: “We hope this new centre will be our own version of the ‘Fuse’ in Manchester; a place where the local church and the wider community can share life and work together for the common good.”
The centre has been funded without any debt and without any public money, all capital coming from the proceeds of sale of the former church premises, grants from Christian trusts and gifts from church members. Another £200k has yet to be found to fit out the inside of the building.
DCF sold their former premises in Old Town Street back in 2017, after they felt God had called them to “build”. Independent confirmation of this word came through Ian Williams, a ROC champion, who leads Riviera Life Church in Torquay, and who first put Mark in touch with Debra Green. Well, the rest is His-story as they say. The ‘building’ seemed destined to be a ROC Centre.
In October 2017, Dawlish had its ROC Conversation and since then ROC Dawlish has been established as registered charity with the lead ministers of the local churches serving as its trustees. During the pandemic ROC Dawlish has been a pioneering partner is setting up Helping Dawlish, a united community response that is set to outlast the lockdown and continues to help local people in need through collaboration with the people of goodwill.
